Equity recognises that the pressure on performers to get work, any work, to put on their curriculum vitae – especially for those at the start of their career. We understand therefore that the temptation to take work that offers no or very low pay can be great. However, there are downsides to taking such work and legal restrictions that cannot simply be wished away.

To help members understand the complex law surrounding contracts of employment, the minimum wage and other issues raised by no pay and low pay work, Equity has produced a guidance booklet.

“Low Pay/No Pay Work In Film & Television: Your Rights At Work” sets out the legal framework that covers low and no pay work in the entertainment industry with the aim of ensuring that performers know their rights and entitlements. The guide covers the basics of employment law, what constitutes a contract and an employee’s relationship with the an employer. It provides guidance on the basics of agreeing a contract and information on your rights regarding pay, working time, holidays and other issues that apply to all working contracts. Finally it offers details on where you can find more advice and help if necessary.

Members can download a copy of this booklet (in pdf format) by clicking here.

If you would like a printed copy of the document email Tim Gale or Christine Blake.
